Original Regency design is recognized for its regal and grandiose aesthetic, fittingly as it was derived from monarchical influence and tastes in the first decades of the 19th century. Much of the furniture of this style was characterized by extensive brass and ormolu inlay and accents, column, saber and X-fashioned furniture legs and, perhaps most distinctively, the claw-and-ball foot. In keeping with the noble aesthetic, rare and luxurious materials and finishes were favored, such as rosewood and zebrawood. Deeply rooted in the favored Neoclassical style of the 18th century, a renewed interest in ancient cultures was exhibited in the decorative features of Regency period furnishings, such as Roman and Egyptian motifs. Further, martial themes were often used in homage to the Napoleonic era with which it coincided. On a whole, the Regency interior was one of luxury, formality and extravagance.
